RASC Newsletter # 16 - Nov. 25, 2016

First, I would like to apologize for taking so long to get this November newsletter published.  I am extremely preoccupied with life events.  My daughter has just given birth to twins; her significant other just had a heart stint put in; my mother has stage 4 renal cancer; my work has created new challenges for me; and I am fighting off self-pity and depression; etc., etc.

Secondly, I would like to wish everyone a Happy, belated, Thanksgiving.  I hope you were able to spend some quality time with family and friends.

I have been with my family the whole week and have been experiencing lots of different and uncomfortable thoughts and feelings knowing that my mother may not be with us very much longer.  These thoughts and feelings have me re-evaluating my life as my mortality ‘meter’ is kicking in.  I am acutely aware of how precious life is and how little time we have.  I find myself having selfish thoughts of what more can I do or get while I am still breathing.  I find myself having using dreams and wanting to escape from all these feelings.  Then I realize that I have faith in my Higher Power, God.  My God promised me eternal life.  So, I have to keep reminding myself that even though I am approaching the threshold to a different state of being, my God is still with me and that what I do in this ephemeral life I now live represents my character and how I will live in the hereafter…my soul will live on…and who am I and what I do will follow me.

Now, reassured that my life isn’t in vain and that the quality, not quantity, of life is way more important, I can be at peace once again.  I guess the lesson I am learning is that the steps are designed to keep us “in touch” with our Higher Power.  I need to keep plugged in and working the steps on a daily basis and applying them to my real life situations all the time.  By doing this, I will never stray too far from the path of life.

I titled this article, “Gratitude”. So, let me list some things I am grateful for:

  1. Being clean.
  2. Being healthy.
  3. Having family and friends that love and care about me.
  4. Having a home.
  5. Having a job.
  6. Having transportation.
  7. Having literature that I can read to encourage me in my journey.
  8. Being able to express my feelings instead of suppressing them.
  9. Being a grandpa. :)

10.Being able to help others.

11.Seeing recovery in others.

12.Pumpkin pie. :)

Thank you for letting me ramble.

Dan B.

I would be neglectful if I didn't let everyone know that all our Area sub-committees are still looking for more support.  I am sure that we all know that "many hands make light work"; so, let's all chip in and help ease the burden of those who have been carrying this Area for many years.  All you need is some willingness and minimal clean time. Check our web site out for contact information (http://rochesterny-na.org/contacts).
